Every now and then, a project comes through the hangar that reminds you the Twin Otter is still evolving.

At Rocky Mountain Aircraft, we recently had the opportunity to undertake a GARMIN G1000 NXi retrofit project on a Twin Otter Series 400. This is far more than a simple panel upgrade. The installation involves significant aircraft disassembly, wiring harness modification, avionics integration, and testing before the aircraft returns to service. For our team, it’s the type of project we tackle every day.

Working closely with Aerocorp Avionic Solutions, the STC holder, Rocky Mountain Aircraft provided feedback and suggestions on improvements for future installation data.  The Series 400 production flight deck introduced the Twin Otter into the integrated glass cockpit era. After fifteen years of experience with this system in the Twin Otter, two major operator concerns have become apparent: the system is heavy and reduces operational payload and it is very expensive to maintain. The GARMIN G1000 NXi retrofit addresses both concerns. The system is approximately 150lbs lighter than the OEM configuration while offering improved reliability and lower component acquisition and repair costs.

GARMIN have built on the foundation established by the G950 in legacy Twin Otters, adding the integrated GFC 700 autopilot and flight director. The result is reduced pilot workload, increased situational awareness, and a flight deck that utilizes today’s avionics technology while preserving the aircraft’s proven capability.

This Retrofit gives operators option for keeping the Twin Otter aligned with today’s avionics technology while preserving the DHC-6 proven capability.

The Twin Otter has earned its reputation by fulfilling the needs of operators for more than 60 years. Whether carrying passengers, supporting industry, conducting survey work, or fighting wildfires, it remains one of the most versatile aircraft ever built.

Seeing Garmin power up in a Series 400 cockpit didn’t feel like a departure from the Twin Otter’s history. It felt like the next step in its evolution.
